Description : Traditionally use of cow urine has been going on since ages. It has been used for various health purposes by traditional healers around the globe. Cow urine contains iodine which is absorbable easily from the gastrointestinal tract. Since ages, the use of cow urine in curing various ailments are known, but still due emphasis has not been given in identifying the potency of cow urine. One of the common problems faced at present is iodine deficiency disorders in both humans and animals that may result in goiter, stillbirth, mental retardation, abortions, congenital abnormalities and cretinism. It is postulated that the cow urine is known to contain iodine required for normal functioning of thyroid gland. The study was conducted on Wistar albino rats to find out the effect of cow urine on thyroid status of rats and to study the thyroidal hormone profile (tri-iodothyronine, thyroxine). The findings revealed increase in serum T3 (tri-iodothyronine) concentration in rats with significant rise in body temperature. With these observations it can be concluded that cow urine has the potential to stimulate the thyroid gland, due to the presence of iodine and can be used to cure thyroid disfunctions.
