NATURE, SOURCE AND COMPOSITION OF VOLCANIC ASH IN SEDIMENTS FROM CENTRAL INDIAN BASIN
Under the Guidance of Dr. B. NAGENDER NATH (Scientist-G) & MARIA BRENDA. L. MASCARENHAS- PEREIRA(Scientist-C), GEOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHIC DIVISION
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHY ,GOA-403 004, INDIA
Abstract
Marine ash layers provide information about cyclicity of volcanism. Volcanic ash in marine sediments is derived either from continent through wind or river runoff and in situ submarine volcanism.
Main objectives are Decipher the source of volcanogenic materials and relate any volcanism in the area.Volcanic production rate and volume, eruption duration, geochemical character of the source and temporal relation between paleoclimate and volcanic history. To study the different types of morphologies of volcanic tephra.
Our study area is Central Indian Basin (CIB). The CIB has an area of 5.7×106 sq. km. and is bordered by Ninety East Ridge to the east, the Mid-Indian Ridge to the west, and Southeastern Ridge to the south. Terrigenous, siliceous and pelagic sediments are present in the basin and calcareous sediments occur adjacent to the ridge system. CIB has various structural features like trace of Triple Junction in Indian plate (TTJ-In) seamounts, abyssal hills, fracture zones, faults and lineation.
Samples were collected from CIB, using box corer. The cores represent a N-S latitudinal transect from 10 to 14°S at a spacing of 1 degree interval. The northern most core is BC #25 and southernmost core (BC#13) .Samples were taken from two different depth i.e. shallow depth and deeper depth of each core except for BC 13. For BC 13 samples of deeper depth alone is used. This is based on the abundance of shards.
Result from LPSA analysis, it is observed that the northern most part of the study area(BC 25) has coarser sediments - terrigenous nature- median grain size less than 20 micron. Southern part of study areas (BC 13) has median grain size less than13 micron- finer sediments. Coarsest grain size is seen in the northern part and finest grain size is seen in southern parts of study area.
From SEM analysis, we can seen different morphologies of shards. Three different types of shards can be distinguished based on their morphology, they are 1.Blocky with a few vesicles 2. Platy shards 3. Bubble walled or Y-shaped shards
The possible sources that could have contributed to the volcanogenic material at the site are : (1) the Reunion hotspot; (2) the Kerguelen plume; (3) Broken ridge; (4) Indian Ocean Ridge volcanics; (5) Afro-Arabian flood volcanism (6) the Taupo volcanic center (New Zealand). All the possible sources are comes under basaltic division in TAS digram, so we can neglect these possible sources.
Age of shallow depth of all cores clearly indicate that shards have derived from Toba eruption. Age of Toba eruption has been estimated as 75ka. Many of the previous works also support this. The ages of deeper depth of core do not correspond to the eruptions of Toba ash. Moreover, the core showed the presence of different types of shards, as against only one dominant type of shard morphology, mainly bubble wall found in the Toba volcanic, hence suggesting a different source, most likely from a proximal source. Tectonic reactivation is possible for inducing hydrovolcanic activity at the seamounts, conduits and faults along these fracture zones . One such activity must have been responsible for the deposition of the ashes studied here.
While the ash were found in all the sediment sections of four cores studied, two distinct ash layers were found in 3 of the four cores. The youngest event dated was ~ 72-75kys and the older event was dated to be 85-109Kys. Morphology and age data support a Young Toba Tuff (YTT) origin of 75 kyr for the shallower tephra layer, which is classified as a mega eruption and which had its dispersal reported in several parts of globe, whereas the glass shards from deeper depths of all cores seems to have formed from in- situ orgin (phreatomagmatic eruption) supported by a different age and the presence of blocky / massive shards with a low degree of vesiculation indicating their formation by hydroclastic fragmentation.
SUMMER PROJECT WORK
PHOSPHORUS SPECIATION IN MARINE SEDIMENTS
Under the Guidance of Dr. B. NAGENDER NATH (Scientist-G), GEOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHIC DIVISION, NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHY ,GOA-403 004, INDIA
Abstract
The sediment samples used in the present investigation were collected from central Indian basin (CIB) at latitude 12° 59.769'S and longitude 75°29.688'E from a water depth of 5070m during 61st expedition of R.V.A.A.Sidorenko using the box corer technique . Core recovered admeasures a length of 32cm.
Sequential leaching extractions were undertaken to understand the association of phosphorus with different sedimentary components. Using sequential extraction technique,Phosphorus (P) associated with five fractions namely the 1) Biogenic phase which contains P from fish debris, carbonate bound and loosely sorbed; 2) Fe-oxide bound; 3) Authigenic ; 4) Detrital and 5) Organic fraction.
The core shows distinct down core variation in the concentration of the various phases of P. In general the total P concentration varies from 696-1095 ppm. Dominant P forms in the studied core are biogenic and authigenic phases, , while the organic P is present in least quantity. Downcore variability of P phases could represent a combined influence of paleoclimatic and diagenetic processes.
