Faculty Recruitment-Rolling Advertisement
The Government of India, through the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), has set up
the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT), Raebareli, U.P. (on the lines of IITs) by Act
54/2007 of the Parliament of India with an empowerment to award certificates, diplomas and degrees and
conduct front-end research. RGIPT is promoted by six leading Oil PSUs in India (ONGC, IOCL, OIL, GAIL, BPCL
and HPCL) in association with Oil Industrial Development Board (OIDB) and is positioned as a World Class
Institution. RGIPT has been operating at Rae Bareli since 2008. It now plans to start RGIPT - Assam Centre
at Sibsagar, Assam. Initially, diploma programmes will be offered. RGIPT’s own buildings on a hundred acre
plot in Sibsagar are in an advanced stage of planning. When they are done, the degree programme will
start.
Applications are invited from individuals who would enjoy the excitement of being associated with setting
up ‘A World Class Educational Institution’. The positions at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate
Professor and Professor are available in the regular cadre comparable to IITs, and also on contract basis.
Other positions available are: Distinguished Faculty, Adjunct Faculty, Honorary Faculty, Visiting Faculty,
Joint Appointment with Industry / other academic or research institute, Faculty on Deputation, and Faculty
on Contract. These ‘other’ positions do not necessarily require a PhD, but experience shall be preferentially
recognized. Emoluments for these positions will be decided liberally and on a case-to-case basis.
Candidates, who are submitting their PhD theses and are likely to complete their defense in the next six
months, can also apply for a suitable post.
Candidates with M. Tech degree from renowned national institutes/ universities in Engineering and
Technology areas having a brilliant academic record with first class in all degrees may be considered for a
contractual appointment, if suitable candidates with doctoral degree are not available. Those whose
performance at RGIPT Assam is found satisfactory all through will be encouraged to complete their PhD
degree and will be considered for regular appointment after the award of PhD.
Reservation at entry level will be applicable as per GOI norms.

The specifications for regular posts are listed below. For other positions mentioned in the
beginning and for M Tech graduates, the emoluments will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
Prescribed Qualifications and Experience:
Cadre Essential Qualification and Experience
Professor PhD degree from a renowned national / international institution with
first class degree (or 7 out of 10 GPA) at the preceding degree in the
appropriate branch of Engineering/ Technology/ Applied Science/
English as the case may be, with a minimum of 10 years after-PhD
experience in teaching/ industry/ research, out of which a minimum of 4
years must be at the level of Associate Professor and/or equivalent
senior level position comparable to that of Associate Professor. The
candidate should have demonstrated leadership in research in a specific
area of specialization in terms of guidance of PhD students, strong
record of publications in reputed refereed international journals,
handled major R&D/ Consulting projects, patents, laboratory
development, organized international conferences, and other
recognized relevant professional activity.
Associate Professor Same as that of Professor except that the prescribed experience is a
minimum of 6 years after PhD in teaching/research/industry out of
which at least 3 years must be at the level of Assistant Professor and/ or
equivalent senior level position comparable to that of an Assistant
Professor. The candidate should have demonstrated significant
experience of independent research in terms of guidance of Masters
and PhD students, strong record of publications in reputed refereed
international journals, handled major R&D/ Consulting projects, patents,
laboratory development, organized international conferences, and
other recognized relevant professional activity
Assistant Professor Same as that of Professor except that the prescribed experience is a
minimum of 3 years in teaching/research/industry after Ph.D. The
candidate should have demonstrated research capabilities in terms of
publications in reputed journals outside of PhD work.
Eligible candidates with less than the requisite experience may be taken
as Assistant Professor (on Contract) in the pay band of Rs. 15600 –
39100 with sufficient number of advance increments. This applies to
fresh PhDs also.
The details of pay and the total minimum emoluments admissible at the time of joining are as
follows:
Professor 37400-67000 48000 PB-4 (37400-67000) 10500
Associate Professor 37400-67000 42800 PB-4 (37000-67000) 9500
Assistant Professor 15600-39100 30000 PB-3 (15600-39100) 8000
(Minimum Pay + AGP = Basic Pay)
The pay carries all other allowances as admissible to a Central Government employee stationed at
Sibsagar. The fringe benefits, such as HRA, LTC, medical re-imbursement, education allowance for
children, contribution towards Pension Scheme (CPF), re-imbursement of telephone bills to a
prescribed limit, book grants, initiation seed money for research, financial support towards
national and international conferences, etc. shall be permitted as per the Institute norms.
Notes and Guidance for application procedure:
**Experience in the domain areas of the RGIPT is desired. The domain areas include all aspects of
Petroleum (Oil & Gas) upstream, midstream and downstream, non-conventional and alternate
energy sources.
**List your proposed, ongoing and completed research projects.
**Write a short paragraph on the teaching philosophy and strategy you plan to pursue
**Provide a list of courses that you can teach
**List national and international conferences that you have attended and your role in them.
(Organizer, Session Chairman, Oral presentation, Poster presentation, Panelist, other)
**If physically challenged, please provide all the details with relevant certificates. The faculty and staff
positions call for training at the operating oil production units, on shore and offshore, and refineries
for all disciplines.
**It should be noted that the mere possession of minimum qualifications does not entitle a candidate
to be called for interview. The Institute may restrict the number of such candidates to a reasonable
limit on the basis of qualifications and experience, which may be higher than the essential
qualifications prescribed here in above.
**Institute reserves the right to fill or not to fill any or all the posts advertised
**The selection committee at its discretion may relax the minimum requirements in case of
outstanding candidates for each of the posts advertised
**Attempt will be made to invite each short-listed candidate for a day’s visit to deliver a seminar and
discuss teaching and research plans.
**All positions are open to Indian Nationals, NRIs, OCI, PIO as per Government regulations.
**All positions are also open to foreign nationals on a contractual basis that can be renewed with
mutual consent. Government of India approval and visa regulations will apply.
**We have very liberal rules related to Exchange visits with other institutions, sabbatical and
consultancy, etc.
**Higher initial pay to exceptionally qualified and deserving candidates may be considered.
**Candidates in India, if invited, have to personally appear for interview, while those abroad may be
interviewed by video/audio link. Candidates invited for interview shall be paid up to second class
A.C. railway fare within India from place of duty or the nearest railway station from the residence
to city of interview and back by the shortest route.
**Applicants who are employed in Government, Semi-Government Organizations or Institutions
should send their applications through proper channel else they will be required to produce a No
Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer at the time of interview.
**RGIPT provides ample opportunities for both fundamental and applied research, technological
developments and consulting. The funding for R&D will, to a significant extent, be from Oil and Gas
companies, MoPNG and the usual funding agencies like DST, CSIR as well as Global Foundations and
International Agencies. For a well-developed research project approved by an experts’ committee,
initial funding during the interim period, when the project approval formalities are being processed
elsewhere would be provided by RGIPT. We would specially encourage joint research with other
colleagues at RGIPT and other institutions nationally and internationally.
