PHYSIOTHERAPY INTERNSHIP
The department had been contemplating to revise the eligibility criteria for
imparting training to Physiotherapy interns. After careful consideration and with a view to
give fillup to patient care by engaging more such interns. It has been decided to adopt
open-ended policy of engaging interns on need basis instead of adopting limited
approach.
Accordingly, applications are invited from candidates who are interested
to do internship at Govt. Medical College & Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh on given
proforma alongwith Demand Draft of Rs. 100/- (Rupee one hundred only) in favour of
Director Principal, GMCH, Chandigarh, payable at Chandigarh with eligibility criteria
given below. Application form and other details may be downloaded from our website
gmch.gov.in. The candidate should apply directly to HOD Orthopaedics for this purpose.
1. The candidate should have passed Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT)
Course from any recognized College or University.
2. HOD, Orthopaedics is also authorized to engage physiotherapy
trainee’s interns according to their needs.

Physiotherapy Intern, Christian Medical College &Hospital, Vellore, India 632004.
I spent about 3 weeks in each of the following 8 areas. Rehabilitation institute, neurology & neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery &medical chest, orthopedic surgery, medicine &surgery, electrotherapy, outpatient exercise therapy unit (gymnasium) and physical medicine &rehabilitation (PMR).
My work involves independently providing physiotherapy based on the specific dysfunction of the patients as mentioned under Section 1A
I worked in a 350 Bedded Hospital which has specialties in which I have worked earlier(CMC)
My work involves independently providing physiotherapy based on the specific dysfunction of the patients as mentioned under Section 1B
1)My duties and responsibities in all units while I worked in Christian Medical College Vellore :
Handle about 15-20 patients everyday
- Interpretation of referrals.
- Initial examination, evaluation, diagnosis & prognosis using standardized formats & development or modification of plan of care that is based on the initial examination or re-examination of the patient in the light of the anticipated goals & expected outcomes & revision of plan of care when indicated.
- Work on treatment planning, treatment execution, establishment of the discharge summary/status and home program for the patient.
- Written, verbal reporting and coordinating the work with other the other members of the team/other consultants with the help of the staff.
- Evaluating the efficacy and effectiveness of both new and established interventions and technologies.
- Expertise in decision- making capability and when appropriate to utilize the physiotherapy aids
- Participating in case presentations, case demonstrations, seminars, physio quiz & formal reviews.
- Assessment and treatment of patients in the Intensive care units(ICU)
- Conducting weekly recreational activities & organizing various cultural events for patients and their relatives during special festival occasions along with other members of the multi disciplinary team under supervision of staff.
A) Rehabilitation institute :
This is an in-patient rehabilitation unit dealing with long term rehabilitation of cases referred from orthopedics, neurology and neurosurgery and other various specialties. Cases treated are : traumatic & non traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries, Congenital and childhood disorders-cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, spina bifida, meningomyelocoele, CVA, , spinal tumors, cervical and lumbar disc disease, demyelinating diseases-GBS, ADEM, transerverse myelitis, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, degenerative disorders- parkinsons, Dementia, Wilsons disease, CNS infections, cerebellar disorders, Disease of the muscle-muscular dystrophy, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, Hereditary sensory motor neuropathy, spinal muscle atrophy, cerebellar disorders, peripheral nerve injuries, vertigo, incontinence, amputations-upper and lower limbs and multiple fracture etc.,
- My duties/responsibilities were similar to what is mentioned in the first section of my professional experience
B) Neurology & Neurosurgery Unit :
This is an in patient unit which deals with the treatment of traumatic and non traumatic neurologic conditions. Some of the common conditions seen are CSM, spina bifida, meningomyelocoele, CVA, , spinal tumors, cervical and lumbar disc disease, demyelinating diseases-GBS, ADEM, transerverse myelitis, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, degenerative disorders- parkinsons, Dementia, CNS infections, cerebellar disorders, Disease of the muscle-muscular dystrophy, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, Hereditary sensory motor neuropathy, spinal muscle atrophy, cerebellar disorders, peripheral nerve injuries, vertigo, incontinence and traumatic conditions where they have head injuries.
- My duties/responsibilities were similar to what is mentioned in the first section of my professional experience
C) Cardio-thoracic surgery and medical chest unit :
This is an in patient unit which treats pre and post operative cardio thoracic surgical patients, patients in medical intensive care units and treatment of patients with chest disease. Conditions commonly seen are : fracture ribs , lung contusions, empyema, emphysema, pulmonary TB, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, asthma, bronchitis, lung abscess, Pneumothorax, Lung tumors, occupational lung disease, Pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, cardiac arrest, cardiac arrhythmias, diseases of pericardium, infective endocarditis, cardiomyopathies, Ischemic heart disease, pre and post operative management following cardiothoracic surgeries such as coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair/replacement surgeries, corrective surgeries for congenital disorders like ASD, VSD, pulmonary stenosis, TOF, PDA, transposition of great vessels
- My duties/responsibilities were similar to what is mentioned in the section 1A of my professional experience
D) Orthopedics and surgical ICU unit :
This is an inpatient orthopedic unit which covers treatment of both traumatic and non traumatic orthopedic conditions. Common conditions seen are fractures of upper limb, lower limb and spine, ligament injuries and various congenital and acquired pediatric cases are treated pre and post operatively. Some common post operative cases include total hip, knee and elbow replacements, discectomy, laminectomy, instrumentation, etc.

E) Medicine and Surgery :
This is an in patient unit which covers treatment of medical conditions like TB,pneumonia,acute CVA,Geriatric cases with diabetes,and surgical conditions like abdominal surgeries and general vascular surgeries. Pre and post op surgical care will be given to the patients.

F) Electrotherapy :
This is an outpatient unit where patients are referred from units like physical medicine & rehabilitation (PMR), Orthopedics, neurology, endocrinology, medicine & surgery, obstetrics & Gynecology, pediatrics and other specialties for pain relief mainly

G) Gymnasium (outpatient exercise therapy unit) :
This is an outpatient unit where patients are referred from units like physical medicine & rehabilitation (PMR), Orthopedics, neurology, endocrinology, medicine & surgery, obstetrics & Gynecology, pediatrics and other specialties.
The common conditions treated are TBI, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s, dystonia, cerebellar disorders, CVA, Cerebral palsy, spina bifida. meningomyelocele, spinal muscular atrophy, coronary artery bypass grating, thoracotomy, respiratory condition, angioplasty, operative -# of upper and lower limbs and spine, total joint replacements, arthrodesis, ligament reconstruction (ACL, PCL) arthroplasty, ankylosing spondylitis, ,low back pain syndrome, spinal and peripheral dysfunction, intervertebral disc prolapse, rheumatologic disorders& degenerative arthritis( rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, periarthritis) myofascial pain syndrome, musculo skeletal disorders, radiculopathies ,post op pain and peripheral nerve injuries.

H)Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PMR) :
This is an in patient unit which includes acute management of patients following traumatic spinal cord injury both Tetraplegia, & paraplegia of complete and Incomplete types, patients are conservatively managed also surgically stabilized, Non traumatic spinal cord injury like transverse myelitis, tumor in spinal cord, spina bifida, complete myeolopathy; traumatic brain injury like diffuse axonal injury, haematomas , prosthetic management of unilateral & bilateral amputation , ischemic, hemorrhagic, and brainstem stroke, cerebral palsy and other neurological disease like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis ,ADEM, muscular dystrophies , back pain, neck pain, upper and lower limb fractures, arthritis conditions and other physical conditions.

Apart from this treating the patients in Medical ICU, Surgical ICU (post surgery, High Dependency Unit (HDU), Operative renal Unit (ORU)(post surgery).

2 ½ YRS EXPERIENCE AS A PHYSIOTHERAPIST IN MYSORE
CSI Hospital Mysore, The Hospital where I work now is a 350 bedded Hospital which has a general set up. The Cases which commonly come here includes Acute CVA,RTA with Poly Trauma and cases like Back pain, neck pain, cp, ankylosing spondylitis, intervertebral disc prolapse, rheumatologic disorders& degenerative arthritis( rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, peri arthritis) myofascial pain syndrome, musculo skeletal disorders, radiculopathies ,post op pain and peripheral nerve injuries, neuropathies. Apart from this we get O&G cases.
* My duties/responsibilities in this hospital includes
