    Job Description
Cruise and Social Staff Positions on Board Cruise Ships
    Cruise Director:
The Cruise Director is in charge of all on-board entertainment. Most Cruise Directors have worked their way up from cruise staff positions and have had some kind of career in entertainment themselves. Each cruise line looks for different qualities in a cruise director. The best way to learn how to become a cruise director is to work for one as an assistant cruise director or staff member. Generally, the Cruise Director is an entertainer and usually performs a couple of times a voyage. Originally the cruise director was the lead entertainer but now this role is more administrative and acts as a supervisor to the rest of the 'cruise staff' department. The cruise director is the most visible crew member to the passengers.
Salary: $3,800 $7,500 US per month.

    Assistant Cruise Director:
This position supports the cruise Director with managing and supervising the 'cruise staff'. Similar to the cruise Director, the Assistant Cruise Director is consistently visible to the passengers onboard. The Assistant Cruise Director assists with the routine passenger's activities and helps co-ordinate the evening's activities. This position dedicates a large amount of time to socialisation with the guests and participation in shipboard activities.
    Salary: $2,400 - $2,700 US per month.

Cruise Staff: Cruise staff positions are often entry-level social positions. This job is for the enthusiastic and extroverted only. They may be requested to organise passenger's activities golf, quizzes, and bingo etc some experience preferred in a similar type environment. Possibilities for promotion to Cruise Director. Fluent English Language skills required.
    Salary: $1,800 - $2,200 US per month.

    Arts & Crafts Instructor:
Must be a friendly, patient and creative individual who enjoys teaching craft projects to the guests while the ship is at sea or on select port days. The instructor will be responsible for providing the supplies needed to make the crafts and must prepare an original project for each class.
Bridge Instructors. Must be an experienced bridge teacher and ACBL certified director who has achieved Life Master standing. The director must be proficient at both Standard American and Acol and be excellent at socialising with an outgoing, dynamic personality. The Bridge Director will be responsible for teaching bridge lessons for intermediate/advanced players followed by an afternoon of duplicate and social bridge play on each day the ship is at sea and on select port days. Depending on the ship, bridge instructors may also be asked to offer lessons for absolute beginners. The Bridge Instructor will also be responsible for submitting any master points earned by passengers who are members of the ACBL.
Caricature Artist. During a cruise assignment, a caricatures responsibility is to provide quick and fun caricature drawings which are offered at no charge to passengers. Usually the Caricaturist is situated in popular, high traffic areas of the ship sketching individuals, as well as groups of family and friends travelling together. Less than five minutes should be spent with each individual drawing. Caricaturists must be friendly, creative and have excellent social skills.

    Dance Instructors:
Most commonly travel as a duo. The couple must be proficient in all dance styles from the classics to the current fads and offer lessons to passengers of all ages and abilities. Dance Instructors must be outgoing, friendly and prepared for anything.

    Disc Jockey:
Cruise lines like their Disc Jockeys to have a broad music base to span generations of their clientele. Experience in a hospitality position will increase a disc jockey's marketability because of the necessity to socialise gracefully with passengers. Experience with lighting and sound is a big asset as well. Some disc jockeys work closely with the stage manager in assisting with show production. Contracts are usually six months. Fluent English Language skills required.
    Salary: $1,800 - $2,500 US per month

    Gentleman Hosts:
On many cruises, the female to male ratio can be quite high, especially for passengers in their senior years. Therefore, some ships feature male social hosts who are recruited to be dance and social partners for the passengers. Most hosts are retired single men who work for the chance to sail around the world for free, or sometimes a small salary. Gentlemen hosts must know practically all types of dance but ballroom, swing, waltz, fox trot and other formal dances are preferred. Hosts must be able to dance for several hours almost every night.

    Guest Lecturers:
This can be a fun job if you have any special skills or hobbies. There is not usually a salary for this position. You do however get a cruise for yourself and companion in return for just a few hours of your time. There is no age limit and you can be asked to join another ship in the fleet several times per year. The most common subjects are, Arts and Crafts, Bridge, Numerology, Fortune-telling, Handwriting Analysis, Golf Instruction, Antiques and Self-improvement, but there are many other areas for lecturing in if you have the knowledge.

Typical benefits would be - Return Air Ticket, short-term cruise, free single or shared stateroom, a drinks allowance, all services of the ship provided to paying passengers, shore excursions, dining with passengers and/or officer's mess.
If salaried $1600 - $2,200 US per month.

Social Hosts and Hostesses As a member of the cruise staff, hosts and hostesses are constantly in the public eye and often serve as the mouthpiece for the ship. Duties can include greeting passengers as they board and disembark, assisting shore excursions staff, giving port talks, arranging parties and dinners, acting as master of ceremonies at selected events and introducing the Captain to passengers at the Captain's Ball. Occasionally, the host/hostess will assist in the library. When applying for these positions, applicants should stress public relations experience or education in public relations. An outgoing personality is extremely important for this position as you are required to socialise with the passengers on a regular basis. Contracts are generally for six months and pay is salary based. This position reports to the Cruise Director or Assistant Cruise Director. Fluent English Language skills required.
    Salary: $2,000 - $2,500 US per month

    Shore Excursion Manager:
Cruise companies offer and sell their passengers organised tours of the different areas they travel to. The Shore Excursion Manager is responsible for knowing how many tours are offered for each stop, promoting and selling shore excursion packages to their passengers. The Shore Excursion Manager also makes sure that the tours they have sold are conducted in a way that is true to the 'sales package'. This position requires overseeing the shore excursion staff, accounting and documenting of all tours or excursions that are sold. In addition to all of the above, the Shore Excursion Manager is required to give presentations or informative talks onboard about the various excursions they offer prior to reaching port.
    Salary: $2,500 - $3,300 US per month

Shore Excursion Staff/Assistant Shore Excursion Manager:
The responsibilities of shore excursion staff are to assist with shore excursions and land tours. The position is comparable to that of a Junior Assistant Purser and, on some cruise lines; the actual title is Junior Assistant Purser, Shore Excursions. Office and administrative skills are required but no previous experience in tourism is necessary. The Shore Excursion staff sometimes are referred to as Assistant Shore Excursion Managers and are responsible for staffing the shore excursion desk that includes guest services and tour sales. They also must politely deal with complaints from passengers. Many cruise staff and shore excursion personnel currently working in the industry got their start on land, then moved to the ships. Contracts vary and payment is salaried.
    Salary: $1,900 - $2,300 US per month.

    Port Lecturer/Lecturer:
This type of position has become increasingly popular. Passengers like to learn information about the ports they will be visiting prior to arrival. The Port Lecturer present lectures while the ship is at sea on various topics of the port's history, archaeology, natural history, wildlife, marine biology, physiology, astronomy, nutrition, health. Arts & crafts, history, finance, photography, business and much more!
    Salary: $3,400 - $4,200 US per month

THE ABOVE SALARIES ARE AVERAGE SALARIES IN ADDITION YOUR FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION IS INCLUDED AND YOUR SALARY IS NORMALLY TAX FREE IF YOUR CONTRACT IS FOR SIX MONTHS AND OVER. THESE CONTRACTS ARE RENEWABLE.
