PROJECT DETAILS :
Title : Online Monitoring and control of APH Drain Soot Blowing Control Valve
Tools/Equipments : Thermocouple, Solenoid valve, Pneumatic valve, limit switches, JB, Analog I/P Card EA01, ABB’s Pro-Control P13/42 DCS
Synopsis :During soot blower operation local controller are installed at each drain valves to shut off on steam temperature. If Drain valve open then there is loss of quality steam. Instead of local controller, a DCS control through solenoid operation has been provided with limit switch so that PCR will have a clear indication of actual valve position and temperature of steam lines.
Role & responsibility : Idea and concept, finding spare I/P and O/p signal in the card, providing signal from field JB to Control room, mounting of solenoid valve and selection of thermocouple..
Title : Secondary air damper control (SADC) system for complete combustion in Boiler
Tools/Equipments : I/P converter, Booster, regulator, pneumatic damper, piston, Connecting Hose
Synopsis : Secondary air is used for proper combustion of fuel in boiler. This air is provided at each elevation through dampers. The secondary air is regulated as per the combustion requirement by regulating the damper and piston. The command from operator is converted into pressure at 0 to 1 ksc by I/P converter. This is supplied to 4 at each elevation. This pressure varies according to the demand.
Role & responsibility : Spare I/P and O/P address in card, Communication between field equipments and DCS, sensor selection.
Title : Online Monitoring Of Flame Intensity Of Fire Ball in Boiler
Tools/Equipments : Flame scanner, optical fibre, Analog I/P card EA01, Isolator, ABB’s Pro-Control P13/42 DCS
Synopsis : There are 4 flame scanners on 4 corners of each elevation of boiler furnace. Boiler tripping is given on loss of 2 flame failure of each corner. Monitoring of furnace fire ball condition so as to ensure proper combustion This intensity is provided only on back up desk and alarm. Later the intensity value is online provided to the operator for their monitoring and trend on HMI. The flame scanner gives the output in 0 to 1 mA. For that the 0 to 1 mA signal is amplified to 4-20 mA through isolator connected in series of the scanner output at DCS.
Role & responsibility : new card EA01 placed in CRA01 panel, isolator connections.
Title : Online Moisture Measurement of Instrument Air
Tools/Equipments : Dew point sensor, transmitter, Manual valve, JB, Allen Bradley RSLogix500.
Synopsis : Moisture Measurement is done by dew point sensor. The sensor is mounted on the Tapping of Instrument Air Line. This dew point sensor measures the moisture ranging between -100 to 20 deg Celsius and gives the output in 4-20 mA. This data is used as AI Of PLC for monitoring.
Role & responsibility : Sensor selection, and signal communication from field to PLC.
Title : Modification and quality improvement plan in instrument air line by replacing the timer based drain valve with solenoid valve.
Tools/Equipment : Solenoid valve, AllenBradley RS Logix 500 PLC.
Synopsis : Moisture gets accumulated in instrument air. To remove this moisture the based valve is mounted at the drain. This valve is costly and during Raining season it becomes faulty. This valve is replaced with simple solenoid and the timer is provided from the PLC programming, thus effecting improvement in quality.
Role & responsibility : Idea and concept, sensor selection, PLC programming for the process.
Title : Failsafe I/P converter at Burner tilt-3.
Tools : I/P converter.
Synopsis : Burner tilt is a very important instrument in the boiler part. It helps in regulation of steam temperature by tilting the fire ball. It is the whole of the firing elevation. Its failure trip the boiler and cause explosion. The whole BT mechanism depends on current to pressure converter, positioner, positioner transmitter. Failure of any demand signal fail the BT. Fail safe I/P stops the demand drop and keep it in locked position the demand fail or the drop in demand, failsafe I/P prevent BT from failure
Role & responsibility : Idea and concept, sensor selection, quality improvement plan.
Title : O2 Analysis at flue gas outlet.
Tools : O2 probe, Rosemount O2 analyzer, filter and regulator.
Synopsis : Oxygen is measure at the flue gas outlet to determine the percentage of combustion of flue. For that the O2 probe is mounted on the flue gas path and continuous sample of gas is taken from probe. The gas is cooled and analyzed.
ACADEMIC PROJECTS :
TITLE : Condition monitoring of Control valve using vibration analysis.
TOOLS : Pneumatically operated globe valve, I/P converter, DPT, accelerometer and Bruel and Kjaer analyzer.
SYNOPSIS : Pneumatically operated diaphragm control valve of sizes varying from 25NB to 50NB is selected to identify empirical model of the control valve, differential pressure across control valve, flow rate, stem travel, and vibration signal at downstream is measured. Based on these signals between Delta P, line size and flow rate is established. Accelerometer with a range of 50g is placed as close to the control valve where the flow impact is high to check the severity of the faulty signatures and status of the valve. A threshold value for the deterioration based on the vibration patterns helps identify the operational life of the control valve. Thus for the 1 inch size the frequency is in 6.4 kHz to 10 kHz range and it may vary according to the line size, valve characteristics and valve size. Systematic experimentation on the test rig has generated data to develop model of the valve. There exist a relation between frequency of vibration, amplitude, and severity of the fault.
TITLE : Crude oil sampling system.
SYNOPSIS : Crude oil sampling system is to withdraw from the pipeline a small representative portion of the product that contains the water, oil, and contaminants in the same proportion as is flowing stream. A good mixing of the samples is must to ensure the droplets of water are small enough to be sampled and the contaminants are uniformly distributed across the line. Initially the samples are mixed through jet mixer and then it is taken by in-line probe sampler system. These samples are then taken to lab where it is further tested.
TITLE : DCI-PLC
SYNOPSIS : DCI-PLC (Digital computer interface) is a program that replaces the CPU module of a PLC. It is designed to implement a PLC in a relatively simple and inexpensive manner using a minimum hardware, a serial interface cable and PC software. It includes 32 timers, 32 counters flags. Hardware consists of an assembly that converts PC serial port information into a no of outputs and inputs. The actual input and output interface is developed by user and connected to the DCI-PLC interface circuit board using flat cables.
