Project title : Characterization of Plant Glutamate receptor

Summary : Glutamate receptor is a synaptic receptor. In animals, glutamate receptor functions in neuronal communication and in plants it functions as a light signal transduction and as a growth regulator. Ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) are ligand gated cation channels that mediates fast excitatory neurotransmission in the mammalian central nervous system. In the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, a large family of 20 genes encoding proteins that shares similarities with animal iGluRs in sequence. The phylogenetic analysis of the iGluR gene family, which includes all 20 AtGLR genes, the gene family from Oryza sativa ssp. Japonica, Indica and prokaryotic iGluR Synechocystis GluR0 were performed. Our analysis supports the division of AtGLR gene family into three clades and identifies the important amino acid residues that are conserved in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic iGluRs. The family of glutamate receptor consists of ligand binding domain, ion channel, modulatory and cytoplasmic domains. The growth of AtGLR genes were studied and the structure of AtGLR1.1 and AtGLR3.2 were modeled.
