Title : DEVELOPMENT OF INFORMATION ON AGRICULTURAL AND HORTICULTURAL PRODUCTION AND THEIR MARKETING USING RS AND GIS IN SOME DISTRICTS OF WEST BENGAL.
To study the market system with special emphasis on their accessibility leading to proper marketing of the agricultural produces, an approach has been adopted to develop an interactive market information system using GIS tools. The digital data (spatial & attribute) generated using GIS tools can also be considered as the base line for the future of e-marketing or geo-marketing system. With this backdrop, four districts of west Bengal (Purulia, Murshidabad, Coochbehar and South 24 Parganas) have been selected to study the local market system and their accessibility for marketing the agricultural and horticultural produces.
The project is proposed to be implemented with the following objectives :
- To identify the gap in between production and marketing of the major agricultural & horticultural produce.
- To develop the information systems on the selected markets/mandies
- To identify the marketing channels as well as the marketing distribution systems of the major crops of the selected area
- To access the constraints faced by the users in accessing the local market
- To identify the intermediaries intervention
- To locate/judge the scope and opportunities of Agricultural sector in the selected area

Topic : “Geo-spatial approach in Soil and Climatic Data Analysis for Agro-climatic Suitability Assessment of major crops in Rainfed Agro-Ecosystem”. (A case study of parts of Madhya Pradesh).
The FAO-AEZ approach that I had embarked upon would ensure an adequate landuse plan based on the crop suitability in terms of the previously mentioned characteristics through the fulfillment of the following objectives :
- To prepare landuse/ land cover inventory using single date AWiFS (IRS-P6) satellite data
- Agro-climatic-soil suitability analysis for rain-fed land utilization types using FAO-AEZ approach
- To develop long term database of climate to assess spatial LGP using GIS;
- To generate soil database to estimate AWHC and to assess crop specific LGP of soil-mapping units;
- To assess soil productivity and agro-climatic suitability for rain-fed land utilization types.
The study was undertaken by me to assess the soil and land potential in general and in unison with climatic suitability to improve the crop suitability assessment to identify area for sustainable crop production in rain-fed agro-ecosystem. The specific requirements for growth of three selective rainfed crops were matched with the soil and land characteristics to assess suitability for sustained production. The various parameters that were used in conjunction with the FAO framework of land evaluation, to refine the suitability analysis included Soil Productivity Index (SPI) and Climatic Yield Potential (water limited yield potential).
In order to obtain area specific available water holding capacity, the application of a unique pedo-transfer function, developed for the Vertisols soils was selected by me. Spatial distribution of climatic data (24-years average monthly rainfall and PET) was required to analyse its spatial influence on crop growth parameters. The climatic data were interpolated using FAO New LocClim to represent the climatic variability spatially. Spatial monthly and decadal rainfall and PET were analysed to estimate LGP variation. I also estimated a crop specific LGP using simple soil-water balance program; BUDGET that derive actual evapo-transpiration and potential evapo-transpiration. Considering the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil-mapping units, the Soil Productivity Index (SPI) (Requier model, 1976) was assessed using the parameters of soil depth, texture, moisture, drainage, base saturation and CEC.
The Climatic yield potential expressed as, water-limited yield potential, which is a complete climatic parameter including both climate (temperature and rainfall factors) and soil factors (depth and texture) in determining crop growth and is a realistic indicator of biophysical possibilities i.e. production potential, was estimated by the BUDGET program, which takes into account monthly rainfall, PET, crop parameters (rooting depth, depletion factor, growth stage’s length, Kc values and yield response factor), soil parameter (depth, texture). For each soil simulation unit, the daily influence of water stress on crop growth was computed. Climatic yield potential for each soil simulation unit was estimated for each crop.
In the study, I made an attempt to suggest an improved suitability assessment for the landuse types, by the integration of both the soil and climatic potential. It can be considered an attempt that has been a unique endeavour to do a spatial agro-climatic suitability assessment being improved upon with information like water-limited yield potential for a regional level analysis.

Topic : “Land use / land cover mapping & Soil productivity analysis for land use planning at regional scale using Remote Sensing & GIS”. (A case study of parts of Madhya Pradesh)
Land use Planning is one of the most important bases of sustainable agricultural development planning of a region.
The specific objectives kept in mind throughout the implementation of the project were :
- To prepare landuse / land cover map using AWIFS satellite data
- To create digital soil data base
- To assess soil productivity index
- To analyse soil productivity potential in relation to landuse / land cover
The AWiFS scene of February 2006 covering the study area was classified to obtain landuse - land cover of the study area on 1 : 250,000 scale for regional level landuse planning. The agricultural land cover classes were mixing up with the forest cover within the study area. Thus the forest cover map was prepared with the help of the satellite data of April 2005 as this month being a dry period, only has the existing forest cover. As a result the major landuse patterns were masked out of the image and a landuse land cover map was prepared. In the study, the February, 2006 image provided only the reflectance of the Rabi crop as it is the season for Rabi crops. Along with GPS supported ground checks, the landuse/ land cover classes were assigned to spectral groupings obtained from the classification.
The digital soil database that was prepared can be used effectively for the sustainable and optimal planning of the future landuse of the area. The parameters supported in this database include the soil parameters viz. soil texture, moisture and temperature regimes, mineralogy, base saturation, organic matter content, soil depth, cation exchange capacity, bulk density etc. Based on these factors a soil productivity map was generated for the area. GIS was used for the effective reclassification of the productive index mapping. The secondary data in terms of soil characteristics and properties obtained from laboratory analysis were used to obtain the Soil Texture, pH balance of soil and soil EC measures. The bulk density too was computed from the collected soil samples. These data were used for soil productivity assessment.
Soil productivity of each soil mapping unit was calculated using the Requier index model (1976). The model is based on 9 factors of soil characteristics. These factors were rated from 0 to 100. A soil database stored in MS-excel was used to rate the soil characteristics based on the criteria described by Requier (1976). The soil productivity map was analysed in relation to land use / land cover to identify the soil potential of various land cover classes and their sustainability. The project was undertaken to study the soil productivity conditions in relation to agricultural landuse planning at a regional level or a specific real world problem.
