Job duties and responsibilities:
Serves as lead statistician on multiple disease area projects
Provide sound statistical advice in order to guide disease area leaders with respect to study design, analysis plans and interpretation of results.
Interact with outside consultants and serve as liaison between outside consultants and disease area leaders.
Develop and maintain computer programs for statistical analysis.
Advise disease area team members regarding database design and formatting of data in order to meet the analysis needs of the project.
Read and keep current with relevant scientific literature.
Implement novel or traditional statistical methods from the literature which apply to studies at hand.
Write analysis plans and portions of methods and result sections of manuscripts and reports.
Give oral presentations of work to internal colleagues.
Educate disease area team members and other statistical team members regarding methods used for analysis.
Requirements:
Skills required for this position include excellent oral and written communication skills, experience with basic statistical tests including chi-square tests, t-tests, generalized linear models, survival analysis, Monte Carlo simulations and multiple testing issues, fluency in at least one and preferably two statistical programming languages such as SAS or R, and the ability to work independently. Knowledge of genetic terminology and statistical-genetic methodologies is highly desirable.
EXPERIENCE: Requires knowledge and skills normally acquired through the successful completion of a M.S. or Ph.D in statistics with 5 or more years of experience.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, managers, vendors or customers.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of science or engineering and algebra. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Must be familiar with the basic concepts of statistical genetics.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Others:
a. Working knowledge of PCR-based genotyping assays
b. Proficient in the following software programs: Microsoft word, excel, powerpoint and Access.
c. Familiarity with UNIX OS is useful.
d. Familiarity with JAVA is useful.
e. Knowledge of permutation tests, probability theory, Bayesian statistics, and machine learning algorithms such as neural networks is a great plus.
f. Strong communication skills and team spirit.
