Job Description:

To develop designs in wovens, prints, surface ornamentations, etc for soft home furnishings specifically for retailing.
Making up sets of sample designs.
Working out a design formula for a group of samples
liaison with retail outlets, technical staff, marketing and buying staff to plan and develop designs.
Accurately interpreting and representing customer’s ideas, producing sketches and design ranges for presentation.
Assessing and approving completed items.
Working closely with colleagues as part of a team.
Using specialist computer aided design (CAD) software to produce a range of designs.
Experimenting with colour, fabric and texture;
maintaining up-to-date knowledge of new design and production techniques.
Developing new design concepts.
Ensuring that projects are completed on time.
Visiting stores and other sources of ideas for designs.
Sourcing fabrics and other materials at markets and other shops.
Keeping up-to-date and spotting fashion trends in home furnishings by reading forecasts in trade magazines and using internet resources

Contents of the Course
Basics of Dyeing, Printing and finishing techniques along with the identification of different fabrics. An integral part of the course was, understanding the color forecasts, preparing mood boards, making concepts and artworks for the same and making presentations.
We were also taught weaving on the sample looms based on different themes. My interest was in creative weaving based on which I came out with the graduating collection of mine based on garments made with the insertions of Aluminium foils, washers, and tyre tubes etc. which was featured in reputed newspapers. We were also taught about the traditional Indian textiles and their implementation on different articles of modern day living.

Details of the Present Job:
Presently working as a Senior Designer since January 2008 with Rosebys London ( India Retail operations ) headed under the parent company GHCL Ltd. , they are probably the largest chain of retail outlets in UK headed to India with a target of 150 stores , presently running with 52 stores in leading metros and sub cities of India .I am looking design as a whole dealing in designing for sheet sets , detailed bedspreads both woven and technique oriented , cushion covers etc. , extending to Towels ( both dobby and jacquard included ) . Along with designing I am actively involved in the creation bit as well , looking at the technical feasibilities of the design , production aesthetics etc. We also work as a help to the merchandising team as a link educating them about the right product available in the market for hard goods and adornments .
Details of the Previous Jobs:
1. Worked as as a Senior Designer with GHCL Ltd. , since August 2007 to December 2008 , a manufacturing unit of the scale comparable to Alok , Welspun , Indocount etc. dealing in sheet sets and duvet covers in varied thread counts ranging from 200TC to 1000TC in both percales and sateens with varied hem techniques and basic embroideries . Since GHCL has its own weaving facility inhouse I had the luxury of experimenting with interesting thread counts and blends and innovative dobby structures for sheet sets and duvet sets for the ever growing markets of USA and Europe . The company also houses 16 colour rotary zimmer wide width printing and processing over which I was handling the printing developments for these markets and own inhouse sampling as well, carefully studying the rotary limitations and colour palettes sent by the buyers for their coming seasons
For the US market I was looking after renowned buyers like Zorlu , Target , Walmart , Dan River , Palmtree ,Rosebys in Europe I had a vast range of buyers ranging from Carrefour , House of Fraser , Caleffi , Lutz and many more understanding their techpacks and developing the respective sample ranges .
I have completely in individual capacity handled the collections for Heimtextil 2008 starting from the initial conceptualization stage from mood boards to the colour palette finalization , swatch developemts and final samples . The complete range included 6 stories with 3 different ranges per story including prints , dobbies , jacquards , sheet sets with hem treatments , lots of value added and embellished dec pillows and throws . My visit to Heimtextil also proved an added advantage to my career as I learned there about the major European groups into furnishings along with their market study . While on my visit to Heimtextil , on a daily basis I made it a point to visit the trends forum and carefully study the upcoming trends in the market for the next 2 seasons in terms of colours , textures , print ideas etc.
Currently also completely involved in developing a range for domestic launch of Rosebys including printed sheet sets for domestic markets but yet with an international flavour .
2. Worked as a Senior Designer with UKaur Inc. since January 2005 till August 2007 with a team of 2 designers and 1 sampling coordinator. The company is a design house based in Delhi, owned by Ms. Urvashi Kaur (daughter of General J J Singh),a design graduate from Esmod ,Paris.
The company is into very high end Garments and Home Furnishings, catering to the up market clientele of UK and France, supplying to stores all over there. Since I always had an interest in design as a totality, encompassing both Garments and Furnishings and working on forecasts. I was completely and independently handling the design developments here for both up market garments including embellished skirts , tops , dresses , both Haute Couture and Pret Wear.
I also worked for the new collection for Wills Fashion Week 2008 and Furnishings for the French market including Duvet Covers, Bed Sets, Quilts, Cushion Covers, throws, Kitchen Linen etc.
In Garments I had the pleasure in designing for Etincelle (France) for their yearly collections in both wovens and knits, Rene Derhy, Zazo (France).
In the Furnishings market I have designed for France Gift Inov, Athezza, Sphere Inter, ID Marine etc., all buyers from France.
Apart from handling Exports, UKaur has a store in the Crescent at the Qutab , New Delhi, a design hub for all the leading designers of Delhi, I am handling all the design developments for the same including taking out new collections thrice a year based on themes and color forecasts.
3. Worked as a full time Designer for 2yrs from Jan 2004 to December 2005 with Spank Marketing and Services Pvt. Ltd, an export based organization dealing in Home Furnishings and Made ups for the major markets of USA, Canada, Europe and New Zealand.
My main forte with this organization was developing new concepts for Quilts sets, Duvet Covers, Coverlets, Comforters, Cushion covers, Throws, Woven and Knitted Blankets, Curtain panels, Sheet sets in cotton satin and Percale etc. combining different fabrics in Woven and Knits with different surface embellishment techniques and basic embroideries to enhance the appeal.
Using different kinds of blended yarns like Mohair, Angora, Acrylic, and Boucley to create different products has been my main area of specialization. Majorly I have been catering to the renowned clients like Liz Claiborne, Nautica, Nicole Miller, Tommy Hilfiger, JC Penny,Calvin Klein, Suite109, working for their requirements for the Fall and Spring seasons in their respective color palettes as per the forecasts .
Developed a new range of blankets in different fibers like Cotton Linen, Cotton Modal, Combed cottons etc. with an excellent hand and feel. Worked for the Baby and Juvenile range comprising of quilts, bumpers, Crib sets, knitted baby blankets with embroideries etc. which went to buyers like Wal-Mart, Carters etc.
4. Previously worked with Seasons Furnishings Ltd(for around 1.5yrs from July 2002 to December 2004), a retail house in premier furnishings with a range of stores spread all over India and franchisees abroad, as a designer for made ups using expensive fabrics like Silks, Velvets etc. for designing Bed Spreads, Cushion covers etc. for their stores.
Also used to combine their jacquard collections based on different themes in Bed and Bath furnishings with accessories like Table ware, Candles, Vases, Platters, Lamps, towels etc. and presenting them as schemes to their renowned clients like Palace on Wheels, Giant Hotel groups like ITC.

- Visit to Ambiente 2009 – Frankfurt , fair of gifting and adornments which gave me a detailed insight of the hard goods in trend for the international market .
