Brief contents of the paper/special problem
Renovation, modernization and uprating of hydel power plants – a preferred option for capacity addition
Most of the hydel power plants built before 30/35 or more years have reached unacceptable reliability levels due to ageing of the equipment and/or inadequacy/limitation of technology as was during the period. To bring the power plants back to their original operating conditions the plants need to be renovated on urgent basis. The opportunity is utilized to modernize and uprate the power plants through adoption of the state of the art technology with comparatively much less additional investment. MECON carried out Residual Life Assessment and Life Extension studies and formulized various techno economic proposals to Renovate, Modernize and Uprate large hydel projects throughout the country. This article outlines various aspects of R, M & U study carried out including benefit analysis of various alternatives considered for four hydel projects in Tamil Nadu.
Electrical Strain Gauge Type Pore Pressure Transducer
The strain gauge type pore pressure transducer uses strain-gauge as a sensing element to convert physical qualities into electrical quantities. It is based on the principle that change of resistance in the wheat stone bridge formed by the strain-gauge/strain gauges is converted into voltage and measured.
This transducer utilizes strain gauge to measure the deflection of a diaphragm. A porous stone is fitted near the diaphragm end. The pore fluid from the adjoining soil enters the pore of porous stone and then after accumulating in the space in between diaphragm and stone deflects the diaphragm due to the pressure of the pore fluid, The deflection of the diaphragm produces a change in the electrical resistance of the strain gauges, which is measured by means of a Wheatstone bridge. In the experiment a strain gauge type pore pressure transducer of internal diameter 8.3 cm for capacity up to 5.0 kg/cm2 has been designed, fabricated and tested.
