The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MOP&NG), Government of India set up The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) at Jais, Dist. Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh through an Act of Parliament (“Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology Act 2007"). RGIPT has been accorded the eminence of being an “ Institute of National Importance” along the lines of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). The Institute is empowered to award degrees in its own right. RGIPT is co-promoted as an energy domain specific institute by six leading Oil Public Sector Units (ONGC, IOCL, OIL, GAIL, BPCL and HPCL) in association with the Oil Industry Development Board (OIDB). The Institute is associating with leading International Universities/Institutions specializing in the domain of Petroleum Technology.
The prime objective of the Institute is to provide world class education, training, and research to roll out efficient human resources to meet the growing requirements of the Petroleum & Energy sector. The aspiration is to develop India as a global manpower hub for the entire Petroleum and Energy Sector.
RGIPT has an ambitious plan—to offer a number of Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree programs, PG diploma courses and Doctoral programs in Petroleum Technology and Management in phases. From the academic year 2008-2009, RGIPT has been imparting the MBA program and two Technical programs.

RGIPT has commenced its academic courses from September 2008. The courses are

I have just passed my MBA (Petroleum Technology and Management). Now I am looking for a job in petroleum sector.

With its placement week ending on 12th Jan, 2011 , RGIPT struggles hard to place even 50% of its first batch passing from Raebareli.

Opened with an objective to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry, RGIPT deemed with an Institute of National Importance, estd under RGIPT ACT 2007 seems to be unable to attract the industry players, let alone the promoters of the institute. The placement stats for this year are:

With no official information about the companies in the pipeline, the student placement team is leaving no stone unturned to reduce the number of students unplaced. It is to be noted that there is no Placement Officer for an INI's first batch passing from Raebareli. Ironically, the central govt. or the petroleum ministry have not been able to comfort the depressed/demoralized students of this college.

Let's wait and watch what this INI holds for itself in the future.
