THERMAL PROTECTIVE PERFORMANCE OF HIGH PERFORMANCE FABRICS. [TPP]
BACKGROUND: Fire-fighter protection clothing designed to perform several functions. Of this, protection from heat and flame is important. Much of this work concentrated on the fire environment, where fire fighters suddenly become enveloped in flame. This exposure generally results in serious life threatening injuries and sometimes death. Performance of fabrics to heat flux hazards is evaluated by subjecting fabrics to TPP testing.
TPP is defined as exposure energy, which will cause heat transfer (through sample to sensor) equal to second degree burn (Epidermis).
OBJECTIVE OF WORK:
- To optimize the design of fabrics for heat flux hazards, assemblies of materials were engineered to increase the performance level. The ultimate goal of our work is to find best assemblies, whose time to cause second degree burn of skin for relatively long period of time under exposure energy of 83.54 Kw/m² (Convective + Radiative energy) in TPP tester (CSI-206,US) and time to second degree burn of skin is estimated using Stoll and Chainta curve.
- Efforts made to study the effect of Thickness, GSM, Specific heat, Thermo-optical Properties of different materials used in the assemblies on TPP values.
MATERIALS USED:
1. NOMEX3A, 100%NOMEX, KEVLAR AND NOMEX FABRICS.
2. NEOPRENE COATED NYLON, POLYURETHANE COATED NYLON FABRICS.
3. NATURAL RUBBER SHEETS.
4. ALUMINIUM FOILS WITH VARYING THICKNESSES.
RESULTS:
1. Reduction in PHRR and improvement in IGNITION TIME of Assemblies.
2. SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS between the layers in the Assembly.

2. ANTI-G-SUITS, NATO SUITS, THERMAL WEAR, INFLATABLE LIFE JACKETS.
