Working from the confines of your home
We all have our own way of handling work. While some prefer proper office surroundings and atmospheres, there are some who chose to set up their workplace in their own comfort zones. For many individuals, working from home is the solution to the work-life balance conundrum.
The autonomy and comfort of working from home saves a lot of time too, experts say. Yet, home does not suit everyone. Working from home requires a level of self-discipline, motivation and good organisational skills that not everyone will possess.
Many of us perceive businesses to run in mega offices in commercial localities. But there are a few who prefer running big businesses from the cosy confines of their homes.
Work sweet work
Sanjeeb Rout, MD, Ascension Outsourcing Services, Pvt. Ltd, first came to Delhi in 1995. Once, here, he realised the plethora of opportunities that lied in the capital city and hence decided to stay back. But life wasn’t that easy.
After a long career stint in different companies, Rout got the opportunity to actually buy out one of his employers since they were planning to move out of the country. “This was probably the moment I was waiting for so long. But taking up such a huge opportunity single-handedly was a daunting task and I chose to involve one of my friends as a partner,” expresses Rout.
But soon enough, the partnership didn’t work and Rout had to start everything from scratch after he and his friend decided to part ways. It was at this very moment when he decided to set up his office at his home. He then launched Ascension Outsourcing Services Pvt. Ltd along with his wife in his one room apartment.
“Today, after a few years of struggle, my organisation is thriving with an employee strength of 50 and a proper office of three rooms at my residence,” he informs. “I am totally in favour of working from my home, even after the expansion of my company because this lifestyle gives me the opportunity to work on my own terms.

Re: Working from the confines of your home
I can give as much time as I want to my work without giving too much thought to my personal matters. Even in terms of finances and management, I feel I am in a better position since I can cut down my costs of operating,” states
Rout, adding, “Since there are no time limitations, my efficiency has increased whereas my dependability has decreased.” Rout also adds that without the unflinching support and understanding of his family, he would not have been able to balance work and home as efficiently as he has done so far.
“One disadvantage of working in such a setup is the lack of professional approach since we tend to take things for granted at times and do things at our own convenience,” opines Rout.
Talking about his experience so far, Rout avers, “For people who would ever want to tread the path that I chose, I would advise them to first understand and get a deeper insight into the kind of work they aspire to do. Difficulties will always come, but with them, will come the determination and courage to face them and shine through.
Away from work
Born in a middle class Punjabi household and an alumni of St Stephen’s College, Supriya Dhanda, Co-Founder and COO, MIE Educational Services Pvt. Ltd, belongs to a family wherein a lot of importance was given to good education.
She has worked for 7 years in various GE Businesses in HR Leadership roles including the last role as AVP-HR in Genpact and is currently pursuing Executive PhD, from XLRI. “My professional career took off very well right from the start wherein I was among those top 10 Indian HRLPs (Human Resource Leadership Program) selected for the fast track GE Career in Global HR.
Having learnt and delivered in world-class systems and processes, when life began to stagnate, I looked for other challenges.” But in spite of having such a successful career, Dhanda opted to move out and venture into entrepreneurship.
“Entrepreneurship was born of a desire to break free from the routine corporate world and do something more meaningful. Also there was this need to work flexible hours and be your own boss. In my last 6-8 months with Cranes Software, I had started working from home, as I wanted to take charge of my personal life.
