Though the switch was not a drastic one for Kala, she says that the situation was the same with her family also as they accepted what she wanted to do. “It’s only at that time I made a conscious decision to be more in control of my time. Having the opportunity to do something you love is a rare privilege and I want to devote more time to writing, which means I had to sacrifice my corporate dreams. Fiscal independence is quite obviously a consideration for most writers, so I just hope to ease into a good situation. My family has been supportive as always and it would be quite impossible for me to attempt this without their support,” she relates. Kala says that she is grateful that she decided to make this switch as she now has control over her career. “There are so many people who are in jobs they don’t like for reasons they have no control over. I am lucky to be able to be involved in things that I love in the measure that I want and during a particular time in my life. It has been a good experience and there are absolutely no regrets and the important thing is to be able to do what you feel like you “have” to do, the biggest regret would be not being able to do that,” she concludes. Strokes of life Nothing sounds more exciting than working as a journalist in a mainline newspaper or heading one of the top positions in one of the leading consulting firms in the country, right? Would you give up a high-paying job to pursue ‘painting’ as a full time career? While many may say that they might or may not; Rumi Ray decided that all she wants to do is quit her job and pursue painting as a full time career because she realised that painting was and will always be her true passion in life. “It was my childhood dream to be an artist. However, I realised that I did not have the guts to pursue painting as a career. So I set out to accomplish things I wanted out of life,” she recollects. However, after 14 long years of juggling a family and different careers, Ray had the ultimate epiphany of life through a supernatural experience and decided that this was the time she needed to make a change and went ahead with her decision. However, this decision was not well received by her family and friends. She says that when she told her family about making this transition, they were dismayed. She says, “My mother was dismayed by this decision and my family coaxed me to stay on to my job as they were more worried about the responsibilities that came with life and were also concerned about my actions jeopardising my future.” She says that there are no guarantees when it comes to being an artist by profession but she still loves every brush stroke she has ever created on canvas. Today, being a famous artist, Ray believes that she is doing what she is most passionate about and by the end of the day, even if she does not sell a painting, she is just happy to create a world of colours that makes her happy and makes her feel content of what she does. When it comes to art, everyone has an artist hidden within himself / herself. All you need to do is find your artist within and explore your artistic skills to the fullest.
