Plastics have impacted positively on our lives and have emerged as a major substitute for wood, for instance in the making of furniture, but there is unfortunately a flipside to this 20th century invention – plastic products like polythene bags are highly polluting. Indeed, hasn’t the revolting sight of plastic bags strewn along the railway tracks or dumped in the garbage tin made you wish that the damn plastic was biodegradable.
