GUIDE : Dr.Chitra Kalyanaraman, Environmental Technology, CLRI, Chennai. SYNOPSIS : Leachate is generated due to the percolation of wastes deposited in the landfills. This will percolate into the soil and will pollute the ground water. So in concern of the environment, many treatment plants have been developed to treat the leachate produced in this manner. These treatment plants are build up near the industrial area. But nowadays, these dumping places are filled up with the wastes and so the wastes generated cannot be dumped in the same places. So a separate land is selected for dumping the wastes. Here building up of treatment plants is cost effective and insufficient of lands. Thus the treatment steps are taken for those samples. Various chemical treatments like ozonation, UV, fentons treatment and peroxide treatment have been done. Also the biological treatment using SBR has been done along with the pre-treatment steps using chemical treatment.
