Project : Formulation and Evaluation of Ibuprofen Topical Gel: A Novel Approach for Penetration Enhancement Description : The main aim of this research work was made to increase the therapeutic effectiveness of ibuprofen, by increasing the transdermal permeation, via solid dispersion incorporated in gel using 2- hydroxy propyl beta cyclodextrin as carrier and carbopol 941 as gelling agent. The optimized formulation was incorporated into gel and was compared with various penetration enhancers like, isopropyl myristate, phospolipon 80H, and menthol. The formulation with 1 :0.5 (drug : 2- hydroxy propyl beta cyclodextrin) containing menthol as permeation enhancer gave better results with partition coefficient 1.28, 96.5% of drug release and solid dispersion of ibuprofen produced release of 98.21 % drug release is achieved in 8 hours. The optimized formulations were further studied for ex-vivo permeation through the rat abdominal skin and anti inflammatory activity. In ex-vivo studies among all the optimized formulations SDIB and SDIBM5% formulations gave 94.3% and 92.36% drug release within 24hrs, when compare to other formulations. The percentage inhibitions of the oedema formation by the gels were in the range of 18.32% to 67.96% and the maximum inhibition was shown by SDIB formulation. SDIB formulation incorporated in gel produced better results than other formulations prepared with permeation enhancers. ACHIEVEMENTS Qualified PGECET with state 19th rank (2008).
